For my Design Futures class with Orkan Telhan, I was tasked with creating a solution for the abundance of plastic waste that comes from single-time use water bottles. Single-use polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles have been around for years, originating from the idea that bottled water is more pure, more clean, and more safe than traditional tap water. Since I know that consumers are not willing to give up the convenience, portability, and social stigma of PET water bottles, I turned to changing the material, relying on algae as a main source for manufacturing the bottles and recylcing them, through algae pyrolysis. I also provide some sample shapes in which these algae bottles can exist in. A synthesis of my research can be viewed here.
